We went on our first snowshoeing trip with these and they worked great. My husband is a big guy, around 260, and they kept him on the snow. They were a little heavier than expected, but it wasn't really an issue. -- Worked well
My only experience with modern snowshoes was a pair of MSR Denali shoes. They worked well, but the rubber strap system left me closer to annoyed than impressed. I had issues keeping my boots anchored. They had a tendency to slide forward as well as a lot of lateral motion.
I settled on a pair of Flex Alps and this weekend I gave them a workout. I was in the backcountry near the Mt. Baker ski resort in the N. Cascades, where we get coastal (wet) snow. In two beautiful sunny days of shoeing, my initial fondness for these shoes was reinforced.
The single best feature of the Flex Alp is the binding system. Where the Denali bindings left me annoyed and fumbling during use, the Flex Alp was a delight. The straps cinched firmly and these shoes have a toe box that anchors to my boots like a good pair of crampons. Except the straps are far easier to manipulate than crampons, even while wearing gloves.
These shoes go on fast! I was in a party of 8 and I was consistently the first person shod and ready to tramp. They are even faster to take off. Just yank the top anchor, loosen the heel strap, and step out.
The next best feature has to be consistent, reliable traction. The crampons built into the shoe look aggressive and live up to their appearance. I tramped over groomed cat tracks, icy snow layers, loose corn snow, and up the face of a 40° slope we dug a rutschblock in. The shoes worked admirably in every case.
The only possible downside I see is that I'm 180 lbs. I had no issues this weekend with a small 20lb pack, but with an overnight winter pack, I'm pushing another 50lbs of gear. It's possible that under some conditions, I simply will not have enough float. But here in the Pacific Northwest, I suspect they'll serve me quite wonderfully for years to come. -- best snowshoe available
Pros: Lightweight, aggressive side rails and toe crampon, easy to cinch in and release out,easy and smooth pivot pin foot plate movement, plastic decking sheds heavy or wet or sticky snow easily, heel lift lessen stress on calf making steep ascents easier, Flex Tail relieves some strain on knees and joints, relatively lighweight, shoe-like contour shape, extremely stable both laterally and vertically.
Cons: Aggressive, sharp and long crampons and side rails tend to catch on hard pack or icy conditions when walking on level or low incline terrain, so stay on steep slopes which these snowshoes are designed. -- For the serious and technical snowshoer
